Bought my Elantra in May 2012. I know they overestimated the mileage but I am getting about 18mpg in the city and less than 30mpg on the highway. Nowhere near what I expected. I do not drive fast or overly aggressive. I would not buy another Elantra or Hyundai for that matter. Considering reporting to the Consumer Protection Agency and the EPA.

Now have 13,500 miles with no change in gas mileage due to "break-in." On the highway, still get 33 mpg at 75-80 mph; 35-36 mpg at 65 mph; and 38-40 mpg at 55 mph. City driving (avg. 25 mph) is 22-24 mpg. Mileage is better with "regular" gas vs. 10% ethanol blend. No mechanical problems although I was told that rear wheels cannot be aligned - no adjustment possible. Ride is harsh and noisy at times. "Leather" seats are comfortable and showing no wear yet. Still get compliments on appearance of car.

Hyundai is making defective vehicles that destroy tires. They will not acknowledge the defect. A few customers have been lucky and had their rear axles replaced at no cost, but most customers will just be told nothing is wrong and it must be the way they are driving or some other nonsense. I have 40k miles and have gone through 3 sets of tires on the rear. The set I have on now cupped badly within 5k miles and makes the car vibrate and very noisy. Both the dealership and the company will not acknowledge or fix the problem.

Do your research before you buy this car. You will see there are many people having problems with rear tire wear/ handling/ noise/ rear axle problems.

I bought my 2012 Hyuandi Elantra almost 2 years ago and I feel like I should have kept my previous vehicle.
My car has been giving off a vibration while idle for over 6 months and every single time I come and complain the service people do not find anything wrong with my vehicle.
I met with the service manager and he test drove my car and stated that the vibration is normal.
I am not sure how vibration is normal, my car literally shakes.
I am almost at 30000 miles and then after that my warranty will be up!
I am done with Hyuandi and if I could drive my car through the dealership to show my frustration I would.
I do not recommend this car
That is why they provide all these warranties!

Been 18 months since I bought this car for commuting.
Have seen a large number of negative reviews about this car so I thought that an effort to balance the scale was in order.
Is it the greatest ever?...No, but it is rock solid and does what it is supposed to do.

My observations at the 20K mile point:
- Gas mileage = never been below 32mpg regardless of driving habit, season, hills, etc.
On freeway, it easily surpasses 40mpg.
- Electronics = Stock sound system better than average and much better than the crappy JBL system in my wife's Highlander limited.
- Road noise/bumps = Yes, it is noisy and you feel every bump but it is an economy car.
Have not seen the issues presented here.

The car is elegant and stylish, inside and out. The tan interior is classy. The Civic was my second choice, but a little too boring (the Corolla even more so). The Elantra has the combination of handling, styling, and fuel economy that were my three main requirements. It's fun to drive. It is nice to look at. The features are many, especially on this trim with the NAV package. The navigation system/stereo/touchscreen is simple to use (you hardly need the manual) and is loaded with convenient features. The integration of XM radio, Internet music sources, external media and phone functions is seamless and convenient. The warranty rocks. The dealership treated me right. Excellent documentation.

Bad Mileage. Check out the lawsuits.

I bought the 2012 Elantra.
The most mileage I got was 24MPG on highway 18MPG on the street I do not drive fast. Steering wheel peels. Awful car. I fill up every 3-4days on 66 miles per day do not buy this car read the real reviews first. Hyundai lawsuit gave $89.00 for gas compensation for 25000 miles. that not even three weeks worth of gas.

Review based on 41000 leased driving miles in SE Wisconsin. No major mechanical problems. One recall repair for defective airbag headliner support bracket. Scheduled maintenance costs low. Ride somewhat noisy and rough, including side-to-side jostling over stretches of rough roads. Poor performance in snowy/slippery conditions (could have been a tires issue). Maneuverability excellent. Feature set excellent - an amazing value for the money. Beautiful exterior styling - got lots of compliments on the car. Interior comfortable, fairly roomy and well designed. Outstanding fuel economy (low to mid 30's combined city/highway). I would recommend this car.

This is less a review of this model than of Hyundia in general. In this case, I'm talking about the program to repay customers for when they overstated their EPA estimated mileage. 1st, they "average" the mileage between city and highway. Not so bad, except that they "round" the result to favor themselves. By high school math, whenever you get ".5", it gets averaged upwards. They average it downwards. Thus, for my 2013 Elantra, they were off by "1.5" mpg, so the averaged it to 1 mpg instead of 2. Then they make it very annoying to collect. For example, they don't send you a check, they use a "debit" card which you can't use without looking up your VIN #. Who carries that around?

i have seen multiple comments online about the elantra blowing smoke. i have had the same problem, almost causing an accident on the freeway at 65 mph. people were swerving behind us. the dealership said we were blowing the carbon out, but we were doing 65 mph for quite a long time before i had to go into passing gear to change lanes to get off the freeway.
Who do we escalate our complaint too ?

Suspension engineering and steering awful.
Owned this car for 2 years and had to replace both rear shocks in addition the dealer could never get the steering working properly.
I believe it to be an engineering flaw. The front suspension started thumping and in general this car got to be one of the worst cars we have owned.

Barely a month since I bought my '12 Elantra w/30K mi and so far so good. I hear all the complaints about gas mileage but so far I have no problem averaging combined 33 mpg. which is great for me considering my Pathfinder only got 16/21 mpg.

I put on custom rims and a better quality tire which seems to have helped a bit w/ road noise.

So far only complaint I really have is the ride is a bit stiff and there's no spare tire. I bought my Elantra for $14k out the door so for the design and features you cant really beat it for the price....Remeber, you cant expect a $14k car to drive like a Mercedes. You get what you pay for, folks.

I'll follow up in a few months..

So far, so good.

I bought this Elantra over 2 years ago and have about 47k miles on it now.
I have not experienced any of the mechanical or noise problems described in other reviews.
The original tires were bad (noisy) and I replaced them after 40K.
As far as gas mileage, I have found that there is a huge discrepancy in mileage depending on many factors:
speed, outside temperature, wind,
vehicle load. and terrain.
I have found that headwinds or sidewinds will affect mpg up to 5 or 6.
I probably average 35 mpg hwy and 28-30 city.
Under optimum conditions I have consistently achieved 36-38 hwy.
Would I buy another Hyundai?
Maybe.
Next time I'll go into something a little bigger.
I am over 6'.

I am a leasing agent for a leasing company and get to drive every kind of car out there. I recently leased a used Elantra a client of mine traded in. This is no Mercedes, but it's the nicest car I've driven for the money. The styling is great, has lots of power for a small 4cyl car, and gets great gas mileage. I regularly average 33 overall. I have to seriously abuse this car to get under 30 mpg. The handling is so-so and it tends to dart from one side of the road to the other if I'm trying to eat and drive with my knees.

I bought this car brand new in Oct 2012. I thought it was striking and loved the colors scheme in and out. I was amazed with fuel economy from the git go. I had a 2011 Mazda 2 which got around 32 mpg and was a much smaller car. It got totalled from a sandwich
between a Cavalier and an Explorer on I-95 near Richmond VA. I used the car as a courier which was driven 250 miles per day. 40+ mpg was typical on my run cruising at 65 mph. I always got over 400 miles out of a full tank. The Bad: Engine knock after about 50k. Car sounded like it had no oil in it. Interior wear was horrible. Paint came off steering wheel center, seats scotchguarded still stained from hardly anything. Radio issues.

I own a 2011 white pearl Elantra. The paint of the front bumper is a different shade of white than the side panels. Positively more yellow and less pearly. The dealer and Hyundai Motor representatives acknowledge the problem (fading) but states that my issue is, I quote: "consistent amongst all similar vehicles". In plain English :"we are aware of the problem but since nobody complains you'd better live with it". It is absolutely abnormal to observe this situation on a less than 2 years old car and the problem seems to get worst overtime...same problem started on door handles and rear bumper

I would have never bought this car if the MPG was this low.
My low is 23 mpg and the high was 34 on a 8 hour drive, not using A/C or the fan.
I called the dealer shortly after buying it, they told me there was a break in period and just to wait.
There must of been email damage control so everyone would lie to customers and say the same thing.

When I questioned the MPG when the Hyundai dealer called me a week ago to try to sell me a newer car, he said he wasn't aware of any law suit but questioned me if I liked my Elantra besides the fuel mileage.
I said no, and he hung up the phone.
Quality!!
I don't want the $100 rebate a year, I want a refund plus 15% for the lies they told me.

I love this vehicle. I am leasing this vehicle and would love to own it. Thinking of purchasing it or even rolling my new lease to another, newer Elantra. Overall, this car is excellent and has been very reliable. Hyundai has stood by their advertisements with the fuel-efficiency even though they give me a check for every five thousand miles due to a suit pressed against them for failed fuel-efficiency. I live in the city and drive highways daily. I get 38-40.5 MPG Highway and/ or
30-35 MPG City. I drive 60 miles give or take a day.

How do I get the dealership to acknowledge this issue?
Both rear tires are extremely worn and cupping causing a deafening roar on the inside of the car. The rear slips and fishtails over bumps in the road (regardless of whether we are going 35 or 60 mph). I thought it was something we needed to get used to, but after much research we realize there is a serious issue. Finally took the car in yesterday to Rick Case Hyundai and the service tech told me it was normal because the rear axle is a solid fixed axle so it cannot be out of line and that the fishtailing/slipping is just because the car is lightweight. Rear tires are visibly pigeon towed and roll slightly inward.

I am sitting in the dealership service department waiting for them to Fix a coolant leak, the A/C, and try to figure out why it blows an astronomical amount of smoke when I accelerate to pass another vehicle. This is a $21,000 brand new automobile and there is no reason for me to have this kind of trouble this soon after purchasing. As many of the other post stated as soon as Hyundai get your money they don't want anything else to do with you. Actually called Hyundai Motor Company to get explanation as to why I was having this trouble this early in my purchase. I was told that they have no explanation and was very rude. I will not be buying another Hyundai any time soon.

I have owned my 2012 Elantra for about a year and a half. I have just short of 18,000 miles on
it. I bought this car mainly for it's looks and gas
mileage. It doesn't disappoint in either category.
I have averaged 32.5 mpg between city and hwy
driving, but i'm also an enthusiastic driver. I have found the econo mode makes about a 2 mpg difference when it's turned off. I have
achieved 40 mpg on the highway with econo
mode on.The car is a bit for fun to drive with it turned off. Only 1 minor problem. On long trips of 1000 miles or more, I will stop at a rest stop in the middle of the trip and when I get back in the cruise will stop working for 20-30 miles - then start working again.

Great car for the money.

I bought the 2013 model in August of 2012. If I drive normal speeds and on the interstate I will get around 39-45 mpg's. Around the city, 32-36. I have been to Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head the last two years and average around 42 mpg's on the trip. People need to understand mpg's matter when it comes to speed, weather, terrain and up keep of the car. I have a lead foot and I am happy with the mpg. People complaining about the rain and snow are dumb and probably just dont know how to drive. The electronic stability is great in this car. Handles above average in the snow.

I'm so disappointed in my purchase of my 2013 Elantra. I had Volkswagans before and I loved them but was tired of dropping money after they hit about 100k and thought let me buy a "reliable" and "responsible" car. The only 2 pros I have are the outside appearance I still like and the gas mileage.

The cons. I have 22k miles on this car and it hasn't been running too good. I get my oil changes and don't drive a long commute at all. It been running bad lately so thinking its such a new car and their "amazing" warranty everything should be covered. They are telling me I need to replace the PCV valve already and that is why my car got stuck at 40 mph on the freeway. and its not covered.

I wouldn't buy it again.

I got this car in May 2011 with only 10 miles on it. At 63,xxx miles the wheel bearings went out, on the driver side then 65,xxx the left side.
at 85,xxx spark plugs and computer update. Now at 94,xxx miles the drive train broke.
I have a 100,000 mile warranty so its covered. But this car is sluggish at times and the gas milage isn't all that. I average 32 mpg. I drive mostly highway some city. Lots of backroads and hills. The car dents very easy with door dings galore and a small hail storm got the best of it.
I found putting V-Power gas in it makes it run alot better. (cost alot more though) and the seats stain with just water.

Had our GL for almost two years and got our best mileage during the break in period which we were told was 3k. It didn't get better after 3k. We were told that the break in period is actually 5k. It didn't get better after 5k. T keep this shorter, we went in after each required distance had been travelled and each time were told that it was more. After 5k it was 7k then 10k then 12.5k then 15k then, finally we were told that under no circumstances is break in less than 20k, ever. Where did all the other numbers come from then? Bottom line, we are at over 29k now and we get the worst mileage in the life of the car. We're getting 11-14L/100 km. We're extremely disappointed.

I purchased the Elantra limited in 2012 after having done a bit of research on the vehicle for mpg, value, and etc. And after driving nearly 78k miles I can say that there are better vehicles for the money. I am on my second set of tires and both sets have horrible road noise that is amplified when stopping on wet pavement. I have had the car looked at by the dealer and they can't find anything. Also the steering wheel would pull to the left since the day I drove the car off the lot to which again the dealer said nothing wrong.

Sadly, my experience with my car since my last review has soured me on it. I originally purchased it in June of 2012. In the last year, I have experienced multiple issues which make me question the long-term reliability, quality and engineering of this car. My issue with intermittent rough idle continues unabated, whether using or not using the a/c. It is clearly not an engine load issue. As well, now the transmission has developed an absolutely maddening metallic clicking sound intermittently when accelerating from a stop, or a roll, and sometimes when letting off the throttle. There is also a tick in the engine when it hasn't fully warmed up. This car is a "good looker" with a black heart.

I bought the car used eight months (9500 miles) ago. The style is nice, the price was right, and it has lots of desirable features.. However, the gas mileage is poor, generally about 24 mpg, with 80% on city streets and 20% on California's freeways. The highway ride quality is barely tolerable. Even with new tires and wheel balancing there's considerable bouncing and vibration.

The customer service was great when I was on their lot.
After purchasing my Elantra, the customer service plummeted, I was no longer worth the time of day to them.
3 months after buying the car it started ticking, Iam thinking no way I bought this car thinking I would have no problems so early.
After 4 months of back and forth to hyundai dealerships, they told me my motor was going.
I was appaulled, this is a brand new car, they treated me like crap, I wanted to give the car back, compensation $100 gas card & 1yr free roadside assistance. DONT BUY FROM HYUNDAI
